Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Duke University Study Shows Why People Prefer Dead End Jobs
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Duke University Study Shows Why People Prefer Dead End Jobs When I was a child growing up in Maryland, we visited relatives in New York and Philadelphia often. Back in the eighties, the toll booth operator job on the New Jersey turnpike was the national symbol of boredom. I remember sitting at the booth longer than we had to just so that the poor operator could have some human conversation. Albert Camus might have been thinking of the toll booth operator when he wrote The Myth of Sisyphus. The famous essay refers to the ancient Greek story about a man whoâs condemned by the gods to roll a boulder up a hill, watch it roll down, and then repeat the cycle for all eternity. In Camusâ view, the more modern worker is much like Sisyphus, working every day of his life at the exact same tasks. In the enlightened twenty-first century, we often talk about work being meaningful, and about engaging in careers about which we feel passionate. But it turns out that at the end of the day, most people will still pick a Sisyphus-like job over an engaging one if they arenât getting paid for the extra effort required by the latter. And in a recovering economy where salaries still have not come up to post-recession levels, this means that millions of disillusioned job seekers are selecting dead end jobs. Duke University Fuqua School of Business marketing professor Peter Ubel and David Comerford, an assistant professor at Stirling University, explored the idea of âeffort aversion,â or why people choose to put forth less effort even if it means less personal satisfaction. The results of their studies, âEffort Aversion: Job Choice and Compensation Decisions Overweigh Effort,â were recently published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. The researchers found that even when an effort-filled job would be more interesting and enjoyable than a boring one, people tend to price themselves out of the job market because they feel their efforts need to be rewarded. 5 Smart Strategies to Automate Your Website and Save 12 Hours a Week - Classy Career Girl
5 Smart Strategies to Automate Your Website and Save 12 Hours a Week I have enough to do every week to run my business and my house and still try and get some yoga done every day. My VA is already busy and I have more things I would like her to be doing. I have an intern starting in the spring, but my task list for her is full and she hasnt even started. To keep my sanity in running my site, I have found these little tricks to help me automate my site. 5 Smart Strategies to Automate Your Website and Save 12 Hours a Week 1. RSS Newsletters I like to email my list weekly. But between writing content for my members, content for my blog, working on my funnels, and content for my social media, something had to go. The weekly newsletter was it. Thanks to the wonderful people at MailChimp, I could create an RSS newsletter. I used the RSS feed from my blog to automatically create the content for my newsletter. Now each week a newsletter is sent out automatically with the last blog posts that went up. And I dont have to do anything besides my daily blog posts. 2. Auto Posting for Social Media If you set this up properly, it can be a life saver. I have my blog posts set up to automatically post to Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and my LinkedIn Group. The posts include the image, the first paragraph and the title. So long as I have a catchy title on my blog post (which I should be doing anyways) it will have a catchy title on my social media posts. [RELATED: How to Build a Website Different From The Rest] 3. Making the Most of My Blog Posts Whenever I have new opt-ins or masterclasses available, I write a blog post about it. Not about the fact that I have a new opt-in, but about the opt-in topic. So letâs say I have an offer about SEO. Ill write a post about SEO tips and make sure I put a call to action at the bottom of the post for the new offer. This way it will get out on social media and my newsletter. Plus, I have a permanent blog post out there to share and pin and get lots of traffic to my site. 4. Autoresponders This one may kind of seem obvious. But hear me out. I dont just use autoresponders for my free offers. I use them for all my offers. Whether its my individual sessions, my courses, my masterclasses, or a simple website review, I have an autoresponder. In those autoresponders are links to my calendar scheduler and surveys so I can learn more about them and they have easy ways to meet with me. Plus I can tell them exactly what to expect from whatever program they have signed up for. 5. My Days of the Week Themes Every day is something new for me. Mondays I focus on my social media. Tuesdays, I focus on my website updates. Wednesday, I focus on my SEO. Thursday, I focus on my products. Friday is all about my blog. And the weekends are all about writing new content. I have my everyday tasks that I do every day but then my weekly tasks I batch out like this. It takes the guess work out of what I need to do each day. To set this up I did a little time study and saw what I was doing every day for two weeks, how I was doing it, and why I was doing it. This not only created my processes but also showed me how to use my time in the most efficient way possible. Honestly, there are so many different things I do to help make my business run smoothly even while I am sleeping. What do you do to automate your business and help you save time each week?

Lessons in self-confidence (from Amanda Blank)
Lessons in self-confidence (from Amanda Blank) What Im listening to right now: Amanda Blank. Heres a song to play when youre not at work. Amanda is a white-girl rapper, darling of the hipsters, and hot-girl candy for the intelligentsia. Right up my alley, right? My favorite line so far is My rhymes are painful and fresh/My p*ssys tastin the best. Today, Ryan Healy and I were in D.C. for a marathon strategy meeting with a board member. The second half of the meeting was about marketing strategy. The first half of the meeting was about finding a strategy for ending how Ryan and I are at each others throats over subjects that having nothing to do with the company. When the board member left the room for a minute, we had this conversation: Me: Its so awkward to be left in here with just you. Ryan: Its not awkward. The meeting is going well. Me: Right. It could be more awkward. Like when it was us not talking in the airport. Ryan: At least we werent sitting together on the plane. Me: Yeah. I know. I changed my seat so we didnt sit together. Ryan: Really? So did I. Then the board guy came back and I bitched about how a vendor we hired was doing no work, and how a year ago I told Ryan we should fire them and then Ryan told me to shut up and so I did. Then board guy said some obvious things: Ryan should not tell me to shut up, Im the CEO, and I should take decisive action faster. Then we all talked more, and Ryan and I started getting along again. And we all plan the next twelve months of the company, getting excited about the community. This is how it always goes with us. But the whole time, Amanda Blank is running through my head. Why does she say My rhymes are painful and fresh? Why are her rhymes painful? I ask myself this. And then I answer philosophical questions about why LinkedIn appeals more to Gen X than Gen Y. And then I go back to Amanda. She says, My p*ssys tastin the best. I have never said that. I am too shy. Even when I was her age, and I was running around in a bikini in Budweiser ads for spending cash, I would not have said that. And this is why her rhymes are painful. Because they exude so much self-confidence. And every regret I can think of is about self-confidence. Theres a really interesting study from Harvard, reported in the Atlantic, that I have spent way too much time reading. The study follows Harvard students for more than 70 years to determine what makes people happy. Here is something: The fact that people are totally pulled together and focused and in Harvard has no bearing on whether theyll have a happy life. Heres another thing: There best indicator of if someone will be happy in the future is if you are 47 and close to your siblings. After I read that, I started calling my brothers more often. Really. But you dont have to wait for your mid-forties to find out if youll be happy. Look at how you frame your life now. If you frame things in a positive light, youll be happier later in life. The optimists win. Plus, the Harvard study finds that people get better at optimism as they grow older. And I believe that. Maybe when I have a startup at 70, I will trust myself enough to act decisively and avoid all management conflicts. And then this becomes clear to me: I have spent way too much time in my life worrying that I was doing my life wrong. But now I see that I can change. Right now. Right now I can be someone who assumes I am making good decisions. Because we each have to make decisions. So we may as well assume they are good. Theres not really anything else to do. Besides, no one was ever penalized for believing in herself, even if her raps were not safe for work.
